Nokia verhoogt guidance

Nokia ups Q3 forecasts on strong demand
Tuesday September 13, 6:43 am ET
HELSINKI (Reuters) - Mobile phone maker Nokia raised its third-quarter sales and profit forecasts on Tuesday, saying demand was strong and average sale prices for its handsets were holding up better than it had expected.
Nokia said it now expected third-quarter net sales to be 8.4 billion to 8.5 billion euros, compared to its previous projections of 7.9 billion to 8.2 billion euros.
"The mobile device market has continued to be strong and Nokia delivery volumes of mobile devices in the third quarter are anticipated to exceed its earlier expectations," the Finnish group said in a statement.
Nokia's shares jumped on the news, gaining 4.4 percent to 13.62 euros by 1017 GMT.
Nokia said stronger-than-expected sales in July and August, cost controls and one-time items of about 1 euro cent per share, would result in third-quarter diluted earnings of 18-19 euro cents per share.
It previously forecast 14-17 cents per share, compared to 15 cents a year ago.
"It seems like a solid raising of the guidance, driven by market share gains and better average selling prices," said Paul Hanson, analyst at Kaupthing. "It's an impressive performance."
Nokia had shocked investors in July with a weak third-quarter forecast after fierce price competition hit its second quarter.
Texas Instruments Inc., the world's top maker of semiconductors used in mobile phones, increased its profit and revenue targets for the current quarter last week, citing broad-based demand.
PRICES HOLDING UP
"This is a nice surprise, although there were some indications in the market that the third quarter would be good," said Hannu Rauhala, analyst at Opstock Securities. "It's especially the average selling prices that are good news."
Average selling prices (ASPs) during the quarter were expected to decline less than initially anticipated, Nokia said.
Those had fallen to 105 euros in the second quarter from 110 euros in the previous three months, with Nokia citing continued pricing pressure and stronger volume growth in emerging markets, where consumers go for lower priced phones.
Nokia had said it expected those trends to continue for the rest of the year.
Nokia's market share in the second quarter was 31.9 percent, according to industry researchers Gartner.
The underlying performance of Nokia's Networks unit was likely to be largely in line with the earlier expectations, Nokia said.
